We Finns are so used to sauna's.
There are sauna's actually everywhere. All the swimmin hall's have saunas as well as gym's. Now there are these modern saunas available as well - infra sauna's. Too, there are public saunas for everybody's use, like in downtown Kallio there's Kotiharjun Sauna which has been there for a long time and keeps on going no matter new generations come - they (we) use it as well.

There are also saunas available for private uses which you can rent for company party's, with your friends or wedding party etc. you name it. And to mention - all block of flats have sauna's for people who live in them.
How about the sauna culture then? Well, you have to get naked. I've herad many especially foreigners having an issue getting naked infront of strangers (or even friends), but what's wrong with nakedness? When you are going to sauna, you are going to relax. It's not a place where you are competing against others who has the biggest penis. Or if you have forgot to shave, who cares, it's sauna. Some people give birth in sauna and sure women don't look like super models when they are giving birth.

And if you are a female and thinking about that you are fat or hairy or your boobs are different size... We don't care. We are so used to be naked, so it's slightly pervert to go and look someone in sauna with a blink in the eye. It's not something you just do, or would do. When you go to sauna, it's like "family" thing, you are all in the same boat even if you wouldn't be even relatives in any way. Sauna has always been a hygiene thing for us Finns, but nowadays it's more and more a place where people go to relax and release their pressures.

So, it's not sexual. Forget that. Lets not make this awkward, ok?

There are actually ridicilously many options from firetruck that has been turned in to sauna, to well, you name it. But if you are looking for THE sauna experience, I recommend you to try these three. Kulttuurisauna just to bring some perspective. By the way, a beer or two is always a part of sauna experience. For children it's Finnish Fanta - Jaffa.

Also there are traditions, like making a birch whisk and using it in sauna. The idea is to hit you (or someone elses) body gently with it. It releases birch oils as well as makes blood run! But don't go and destroy wild birch just like that...! If you see someone cutting a birch, you can go and ask if you could collect some brach from it.
