Prices in Helsinki

Helsinki is known for it's high prices. Gladly lately taxes for food have been taken down a bit and this has effected the prices in super markets. Here are some examples of costs in different situations:

Lunch for one 11€ (drinks not included, water is free of charge usually and most of the places include coffee/tea in their lunch)

Meal in inexpensive restaurant for one 15€ (drinks not included). With drinks around 22€.

Public transportation in Helsinki is 3,20€ for 1 hour ticket. Ticket including Helsinki, Vantaa, Espoo and Kauniainen cost 5,50€ (this is the one you buy when you're coming from/going to airport). Ticket is valid for 1,5h.

Drinks: tap beer's around 5-7€, a glass of wine (16cl) 7,50€, A bottle of drinkable wine in Alko licquor store start at 8,5€ (cheapest ones 6€). Vodka: Korkenkorva 12€, Smirnoff 22€, Russian Standard 26€. Learn more here.

Drinks at club: gin tonic around 9€ (with cheapest gin!) Note that if you order vodka soda, some places charge you 2,50€ for soda.

Accommodation: hotels from 80€/night, Airbnb from 50€/night for an apartment.

Basic stuff: one grapefruit is 1,30€ (off-season), organic juice 2€ (1l), package of organic rice 3€ (500g), gluten free pasta 2,50€, organic bananas 2,50€ (kg), if you're on a budged you can find non organic products much cheaper but then again - prefer organic for nutritious food.

These are the main things that suck your vallet empty. Living in Helsinki is sure expensive, but there are things that are much more expensive in other countries, like electricity. We pay here 35€ when the bill would be 100€ in Germany. Also teleoperators have good prices, around 20€/a month flat rate, including internet. Also when you have a kitchen life becomes easy, and especially if you follow seasonal vegetables, you'll be ok. During winters tomatoes can rise up to over 5€/kg!
